July 4th parade

July 4th parade

Too many politicians

I just got home from watching the July 4th parade and fireworks show in Kailua Village. It was a total zoo, but really fun to see many friends, neighbors, kids of all ages and our community out in force to watch a parade commemorating Independence Day.

It mostly honored our military, veterans, police, firemen and all those who help keep all of us safe, as well as some of our local business organizations.

But I have to say that it was very disappointing to see so many politicians involved in the parade, trying to garner our votes. I felt it was not an appropriate venue for politicking. Don’t we get enough of all that on TV radio, newspapers, signs polluting our roadways, side of the road wavers, etc.? Couldn’t we have had one event free of politics?

I’m sure the visitors from the mainland — and there were gobs of them too — could have cared less about the politicians doing their politicking during an Independence Day parade.

Almost everyone I talked to after the parade and fireworks loved the whole event, but every one one of them commented about the politicians being part of the parade and how it was way over the top.

Give us a break from the overwhelming grind of the political machine.

Feral cats

Begin a dialogue

I want to express my appreciation to those writers of letters to the editor over the past couple of months about feral cats.

I understand the frustration and even animosity that is there about the problem. This is where a dialogue can begin.

We can work together and move toward a solution most of us can be happy with or do nothing and stay frustrated.

I would like to propose community meetings in HOVE, Kona and from Waikoloa north.

Anyone who is interested can call our hotline at 327-3724 and let your interest be known.

Any issues about the feral and the domesticated “dumped” cats can be addressed, if the topic is given when calling in to express interest.

Thank you for your interest and input.
